I saw When We Were Kings last night, and it was certainy an enjoyable experience. I have a new respect for Don King. He's obviously sleazy, but he does have an amazing ability to make things happen. Too bad he doesn't use it for more good. But of course what really impressed me was Ali. In a sense it's good that the movie didn't concentrate too much about Ali's political acts (as important as they may be) because we got to see his engaging personality and laser sharp wit. He must have prepared some of those rhymes, but the sure seemed spontaneous, and funny as hell. I almost want to see the movie again and write down all his little poems. (To Howard Cossell he says something like: that thing on your head is phony and comes from the tail of a pony). As for the fight, what kind of strategy is letting a guy hit you until he tires himself out. I can't believe it worked! For once I actually agree with Mr. Cranky though ... why did they let those two windbags Mailor and Plimpton talk so much. If I really liked them I would buy their books. I don't think they added anything to the movie at all and wasted our time with comments about Don King's hair looking as if he had "stuck his finger in an electrical socket" or "fallen down an elevator shaft". Well, gee isn't that original!
A Cranky in training (not),
