01/13/05: Former Iraq administrator L. Paul Bremer, III commented on Saddam's army

yesterday's Wall Street Journal had an editorial by him defending the U.S. disbanding the Iraqi army. Said disbanding the army sent a message that the evil Baathists were gone, and it kept the Kurds and Shi'ites from breaking away. Most of the army was Shi'a conscripts who deserted as the U.S. military advanced. "Who the critics have us go to their homes and force them to go back to the Iraqi army?"

(That last bit killed me. Funny, the U.S. army has no problem forcing its own troops to stay on after their tours have ended.)

And of course, it would cost money to keep the Iraqi army running.

He may have some valid points, but I tend to disregard the opinions of anyone whose name begins with an initial and ends with a number.
