History of the International House of Pancakes (IHOP)
IHOP was founded by Jerry Lapin, Al Lapin, along with Al and Trudy Kallis who were early investors. The first IHOP opened its doors on July 7th, 1958 in Toluca Lake, a suburb of Los Angeles, California. By 1960, the company began expansion through franchising. In 1963, International Industries is adopted as the company name after acquiring several franchise brands, which remained under its control throughout the 1960s. These brands include Golden Cup Coffee Shops, Wood Pit Barbeque, Orange Julius, and, of course, the International House of Pancakes. In 1973, the famous acronym “IHOP” was introduced through a marketing campaign. In 1979, the company builds is final A-frame IHOP building, which had become an icon. Actor Cliff Bremis stars in his first IHOP commercial in 1985. He soon becomes an IHOP favorite as he stars in IHOP commercials for a decade. The 500th IHOP is built in 1992, and in 1993, the average sales per IHOP establishment exceed $1 million dollars. System-wide sales in all IHOP establishments reach $1 billion for the first time in 1998. In 2001, the 1,000th IHOP is opened in Layton, Utah, and in 2003, the company adopts the slogan “Come hungry. Leave happy,” which would win the Advertising and Marketing Awareness award in 2004. In 2007, IHOP Corp. acquires Applebee’s International, Inc. With Applebee’s having more than 3,300 establishments, the combination of the two becomes the largest restaurant company in the world. In 2008, IHOP celebrated 50 years of business. As of 2010, IHOP has over 1,400 locations in the Unites States, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.
IHOP: Famous For…
The most recognizable thing about IHOP is its name. The acronym IHOP was adopted in 1973 and has become a cultural icon of sorts. Also, the company slogan “Come hungry. Leave happy.” has won prestigious marketing awards and is one of the most well-known company slogans.
IHOP was primarily a breakfast restaurant. However, they have now added menu items that encompass both lunch and dinner. As far as the food at IHOP goes, they are famous for their pancakes and other breakfast items. One will often see specials advertised on television that will be directed towards their pancakes or other breakfast items. The “International” aspect of IHOP comes from the three crepe-style pancakes they offer: German-style, which is served with lemon butter, lemon slices, and powdered sugar; French-style, which is served with orange marmalade; and Swedish-style, which is served with lingonberry jam and lingonberries. The menu also offers French toast and Belgium waffles.
IHOP Supports Their Communities
IHOP takes part in several fundraisers in order to give back to the communities that have given IHOP so much. National Pancake Day is one of their most popular and lucrative fundraisers. In the five years since National Pancake Day started, IHOP has raised $5.35 million to support Children’s Miracle Network along with other charities.
Each spring in Arizona, IHOPs support Childhelp, one of the largest nonprofit organizations, which is dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Since its start in 1999, IHOPs in Arizona have raised more than $275,000 dollars to support Childhelp.
During the holidays, IHOP takes part in the Toys for Tots program which collects toys for children of families in need.
IHOP also encourages its employees to take part in assisting in the communities in which they operate. Philanthropic Day allows employees to donate time to volunteer for just about any cause they see fit. Employees have also invested many hours with organizations like Habitat for Humanity and the Los Angeles Downtown Woman’s Shelter.
