LA Fitness is a popular chain of health clubs based in Irvine, California. The chain is privately owned by the firms Madison Dearborn Partners, Seidler Equity Partners and CIVC Partners. There are currently over 300 LA Fitness clubs that provide services to over 1.5 million members. The clubs span 21 different states as well as several Canadian provinces. LA Fitness generally targets young professionals, although it has programs catering to children, families, middle-aged adults and senior citizens.
LA Fitness describes its mission as: “To help as many people as possible achieve the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. To fulfill this mission, we will create a nationwide network of sports clubs, offering our members the widest range of amenities and the friendliest service at an affordable price.”
The privately owned chain was first opened in 1984 by the same executive team that heads it today. This executive team incorporated a highly successful strategy of buying out struggling fitness centers and operating them as LA Fitness clubs. This strategy was mainly used between 1984 and 1995, a period of advanced growth, during which LA Fitness turned around several poorly performing clubs before developing its current signature look, which was introduced with the development of a brand new health club in 1995. At 45,000 square feet, the new multi-purpose fitness club was much larger and more sophisticated than the earlier LA Fitness locations. This fancier design attracted a multitude of new customers, and was quickly used as a blueprint for twelve prototype clubs, which were opened in Southern California and Arizona in 1998. This successful model was also used to standardize the existing LA Fitness clubs that had been acquired between 1984 and 1995.
Today, all LA Fitness clubs are built at or above the standard of the premiere 1995 location. The facilities include state-of-the-art equipment for cardio training and weight lifting.
