Olay is one of the top-selling major consumer brands among Procter & Gamble’s products. As the leading brand for women’s skin care, body wash and soap, Olay has ten product ranges under its brand name offering facial moisturizers, facial cleansers, skin repair treatments, body wash and body moisturizers.
The history of Olay started in South Africa in the 1950s. It was created by a South African chemist Graham Wulff for his wife Dinah when he wanted to create a feminine facial moisturizer that has the right texture and fragrance to make the skin look beautiful and radiant. Wulff’s discovery brought about the birth of ‘Oil of Olay Beauty Fluid’ and the product achieved remarkable success in South Africa. In 1959, Wulff and his partner Jack Lowe expanded their business outside of South Africa; and the product was named ‘Oil of Ulay’ in the United Kingdom, ‘Oil of Ulan’ in Australia and ‘Oil of Olaz’ in France, Italy and Netherlands.
The Olay business was bought over by Richardson Merrill and became Richardson-Vicks Inc in 1970. Richardson-Vicks improved the product range to include ‘Night of Ulay’ and Beauty Cleanser and expanded the product reach further to Spain, France and Germany. In 1985, Procter & Gamble (P&G) bought over Richardson-Vick and changed the brand name to ‘Olay’ in 1999. Today, Olay has become one of P&G’s top 22 billion dollar brands in the world. Olay raked in an estimated USD 2.8 billion in sales by end of 2009 fiscal year, which accounted for 3.5 per cent of P&G’s total revenue for that year.
