Friendly’s Restaurants – how it all began

Seventy five years ago two young brothers got a loan from their parents and opened a small business in Springfield, Massachusetts. The brothers called their new enterprise, Friendly Ice Cream.

Twenty year old S. Prestley Blake, and his eighteen year old brother Curtis, sold two scoops of ice cream in a cone. The asking price was five cents. The brother’s produced their icy delight with a hand-crank ice cream maker in the back of the store. The year was 1935. The brother’s store was a pleasant, economical place to bring the whole family for an excursion.

A lot of things have changed in the last seventy-five years but Friendly’s Restaurants are still sociable, satisfying, reasonably priced places where family and friends meet for delicious meals and family fun. Friendly’s is a perfect spot to relax and take pleasure in sharing a meal and spending time together.

The Blake brothers opened a second shop in1940 and expanded the menu to include hamburgers. They temporarily closed the shops while World War II raged. The patriotic brothers posted signs in the windows that read, “Closed until we win the war!”

After the war, ten more Friendly Ice Cream shops opened in Massachusetts and Connecticut. The menu continued to expand and customers could now purchase a container of ice cream to take home. Friendly Ice Cream built a manufacturing plant in West Springfield to meet growing demand for their products.

Company headquarters moved from Springfield to Wilbraham, Massachusetts in 1960. By 1974 the company owned five hundred restaurants in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

Friendly Ice Cream continued to grow over the next two decades. The brothers added breakfast, lunch and dinner to their offerings. Ice cream continued to be the main business focus, however, and accounted for a large portion of the company’s revenue.

Forty-four years after the first Friendly Ice Cream Shop opened the Blake brothers retired. They sold their restaurants, now located in sixteen states, to Hershey Foods Corporation. The brothers had amplified a $547 loan from their parents into a restaurant chain that sold for $162 million.

More restaurants opened under Hershey’s ownership. By the mid-1980’s Friendly’s employed 34,000 people. Hershey’s Foods Corporation sold Friendly Ice Cream to Donald N. Smith in 1988. Mr. Smith added an “s” to the company’s name and the chain became Friendly’s Restaurant.

Friendly’s restaurants, and their generous customers, have benefited twenty-six Easter Seals affiliate organizations up and down the East Coast. Kids with disabilities attend dozens of Camp Friendly’s every summer.

Friendly’s Ice Cream will donate a coupon for a free carton of your favorite ice cream flavor to blood donors in July, 2010. The coupons, distributed by the American Red Cross, are redeemable at participating Friendly’s restaurants.

Many organizations benefit from Friendly’s financial support. Friendly’s donates to both the YMCA and The Boys and Girls Clubs to support physical fitness among children and adults.

Friendly’s Connections

Our digital age brings a new dimension to Friendly’s. Mike and Abby met online. Soon they decided to meet for coffee and ice cream at their local Friendly’s Restaurant. They discovered they had much in common including delicious Jumbo Fronions™. They continued meeting at Friendly’s for lunch and dinner and their relationship grew. Now, they meet at Friendly’s to make plans for their upcoming wedding.

Parent’s Resource

Moms and Dads know that a little motivation can go a long way in getting kids to work together as a family. To foster greater cooperation Friendly’s has developed a “Goodness Chart.” Friendly’s Parents Resource Center will help you, and your child, build a chart that schedules and organizes chores and responsibilities. Register with Friendly’s and create an individualized chart. Update the chart regularly and Friendly’s will do the rest. Soon your child may be a Friendly’s Hall of Fame member!

Friendly’s Restaurants are pleasant, sociable restaurants offering delectable ice cream treats and tasty just as the Blake brothers intended when took a risk and opened up their shop in the middle of the depression.

Red Robin Coupons

Red Robin’s History

It’s hard to believe that Red Robin, home of succulent gourmet hamburgers and sandwiches, has actually been around since the 1940’s! It all began when a man named Sam opened a tavern near the University of Washington. Being multi-talented, Sam also sang in a barbershop quartet, and one of his favorites was “When the Red, Red Robin (Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin’ Along).” The tavern became known as Sam’s Red Robin, and in later years it was simply called Red Robin.

In 1969 the first actual Red Robin opened in Seattle, Washington, by then-owner, Gerry Kingen. The original menu was mostly sandwiches, munchies and beer. Then, in 1973, the menu was upgraded to include 3 burgers that are still around today: the Red Robin Bacon Cheeseburger, the Red Robin Gourmet Cheeseburger, and the Royal Red Robin Burger, complete with fried egg. This last burger, while unusual, was created to comply with an ordinance in effect at the time in Seattle. Apparently, it was against the law to operate a restaurant during certain hours unless breakfast was served. Not wanting to close during those hours, Kingen added a fried egg to a burger and it became breakfast! In spite of the strange combination, it’s one of their most popular burgers.

During the 1970’s and ‘80’s, Red Robin began to expand. Mike and Steve Snyder, who were frequent Red Robin diners themselves, opened the first franchise restaurant in Yakima. In the mid-1980’s, as the expansion spread to other states and Canada, a Japanese food-service company known as Skylark acquired a major interest in Red Robin. During this period, and in the early 1990’s, the restaurant mascot, Red, was introduced as well as the signature “Bottomless Steak Fries.” This all-you-can-eat feature guarantees that no one will ever leave hungry when dining at Red Robin!

Eventually, Red Robin cut its ties with Skylark, merged with the Snyder Group, and moved its headquarters to Greenwood Village, Colorado. By the year 2000, the chain had grown to 150 restaurants, and by 2009 it numbered over 400. Red Robin has done well financially in the 21st century, and continues to pile up the accolades. Some of their recent awards include being named one of the Ten Best Family Restaurants in Parent Magazine, the Nation’s Restaurant News’ Excellence in Advertising on Television Award (EAT) and the #1 Rated Zagat Best Burger of 2009 Award. Their operating and financial officers have also been the recipients of numerous awards for their business successes and their community involvement.

The Red Robin Philosophy

The Red Robin philosophy is somewhat unique in the business world. The core values of Honesty, Integrity, Continually Seeking Knowledge and Having Fun are at the heart of the Red Robin organization. All Team Members wear these core values on their shirt sleeves, and they are encouraged to subject their guests to Unbridled Acts. These are similar to Random Acts of Kindness, and several testimonials appear on the Red Robin website describing some of these Unbridled Acts.

What Red Robin is Known For—Community Involvement

Red Robin has also been a valuable support in the community through programs like the Red Robin Foundation, which offers emergency aid and scholarships to Team Members in need. The U-Act Program encourages kindness and volunteerism in middle school students. Participating schools are eligible for grants when they adopt this character-building program. Every year, Red Robin hosts a contest to find the winning gourmet burger recipe invented by a kid. Proceeds from the sale of these burgers are donated to The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). They also provide free Child ID kits to parents. Special Olympics is another organization that benefits from Red Robin’s support.

What Red Robin is Known For—Mouthwatering Gourmet Burgers and Spirits

The philanthropic ideals of Red Robin are only surpassed in most people’s minds by the fantastic food that they serve. The quality of their meat and produce is first-rate, and the menu is continually evolving. Their most famous menu items include Freckled Lemonade, Bottomless Steak Fries, Towering Onion Rings, the Royal Red Robin Burger and Mountain High Mudd Pie. A sampling from their current menu includes:

Appetizers

• Towering Onion Rings
• Cheddar Bacon Skins
• Fresh- fried Zucchini
• Guacamole, Salsa and Chips

Gourmet Burgers

• Blackened Bayou Burger
• Sauteed ‘Shroom Burger
• A.1. Peppercorn Burger
• Banzai Burger
• Bleu Ribbon Burger
• Royal Red Robin Burger

Chicken Sandwiches and Other Favorites

• Whiskey River BBQ Chicken Sandwich
• Ragin’ Cajun Chicken Sandwich
• Crispy Fish Sandwich
• Grilled Salmon Sandwich
• The Garden Burger

Entrees

• Santa Fe Chicken Pasta
• Arctic Cod Fish & Chips
• Whiskey River BBQ Ribs
• Red’s Rice Bowl

Fresh Salads

• Asian Chicken Salad

Wraps, Sandwiches, Soups

• Clamdigger’s Clam Chowder
• Red’s Homemade Chili Chili
• French Onion Soup
• Whiskey River BBQ Chicken Wrap

Desserts

• Apple Crisp
• Mountain High Mudd Pie

Bottomless Beverages and Malt Shoppe

• Freckled Lemonade
• Rookie Magic
• Hawaiian Heart Throb Smoothie
• Soft Drinks
• Classic Malts and Shakes

Masterful Margs & Mixology

• Mango Margarita
• Sand in Your Shorts
• Fruity Boozie Daiquiri
• Tropical Mai Tai
• Wines by the Glass
• Beer

While this is by no means a complete menu, it is easy to see that Red Robin offers a good variety of choices using quality ingredients. The menu includes some vegetarian options and allergen information is available upon request. There is also a gluten-free menu option online at their website–http://www.redrobin.com. And, if you’re worried about calories, Red Robin has a Customizer feature online that allows you to build your burger and check the calorie content.

What Red Robin is Known For—Unique Décor

Almost anyone who has ever visited a Red Robin Restaurant can attest to their amazing eclectic décor and style. Probably none of the restaurants are exactly alike, yet the ambience is always similar—family-oriented, upbeat, fun and maybe a little crazy. Posters of everything are everywhere. There may be airplanes hanging from the ceiling, and/or a TV in the floor, as well as several other places in the restaurant. There may be a Statue of Liberty with a hamburger on her torch, and an American flag made of baseballs. Red Robin sells some of their glassware, but much of the artwork is created solely for the restaurant.

Some Red Robins sport game rooms, but almost all of them have some type of pinball machines or other games for the kids to try. Red, the mascot, makes random visits to the restaurant. Balloons are usually in evidence, and often given to kids when they leave .

What Red Robin is Known For—Being a Kid-Friendly Restaurant

Along with the U-Act Program and NCMEC and Special Olympic support, Red Robin is continually providing activities to encourage kids to perform Unbridled Acts and develop to their fullest potential. Recently they sponsored a “How Do You Make a Difference” Poem Contest. Currently, they are sponsoring an Etch-a-Sketch-a- Burger Contest, which also includes an adult entry category. Every year a contest is held in which kids can design a gourmet burger. The one that is chosen the winner is served in the restaurant, and is entered into a cookbook which can be downloaded free at the website.

There are also online activities for the kids, to include “Gone Fishin’,” and “Burger Blaster.” Red offers some printable games, also.

Red Robin Coupons and Discounts

The best way to procure discounts at Red Robin is to sign up for their e-Club. It’s free, and it guarantees you a free burger on your birthday, and a welcome gift as well. Occasionally, throughout the year, Red Robin will then send you offers for free appetizers and also keep you updated on their special offers. A recent special offer featured a Prime Chophouse Burger for $6.99. Currently, they are featuring the “Yumm,” or Big Melt Bacon Burger or a Honey Mustard Chicken Sandwich for that same price. Since most of their burgers average about $9, this is a good deal. And, of course, they are served with Bottomless Steak Fries!

The eClub also generates occasional coupons such as $2 off Arctic Cod Fish & Chips. Unfortunately, they have recently had problems with a fraudulent coupon advertising a free gourmet burger and sundae. It is also possible to obtain some coupon books for Red Robin kids’ meals on eBay. This does not appear to be a current promotion, though, and of course you would have to bid on them.

Around the December holidays there is usually a gift card promotion. If you buy a $25 Red Robin gift card, you receive a free $5 gift card.

Success in the restaurant business is often fleeting and/or difficult to achieve, but Red Robin seems to have some of the winning ingredients—a good philosophy, good food and loyal customers. If Sam were alive today, he would be proud of the chain of restaurants that bears the name of one of his favorite songs!

Marlboro Cigarette Coupons

The nation’s leading cigarette manufacturer, Philip Morris USA, boasts the highest revenues, income and market share for more than 20 consecutive years.

Marlboro began as a British company and can trace its history back to the early 1800s when Philip Morris opened as a single British shop on London’s Bond Street selling tobacco and ready-made cigarettes.

It was 1902 when Philip Morris & Company incorporated as a small tobacco company in New York City and by 1924 was advertising Marlboro as a cigarette for women with the catchphrase “Mild as May”. In 1938 Philip Morris & Company offered preferred stock to the public.

The brand was sold until World War II when it was temporarily removed from the market. In 1954 Philip Morris repositioned Marlboro cigarettes as a cigarette brand for men. By the mid 1950s Philip Morris became famous for its billboard advertisements and ads with the introduction of the first of many rugged cowboys they dubbed the Marlboro Man.

While Philip Morris was the smallest among the six major tobacco companies in the US in 1960, it became the largest cigarette company in the country by 1983. In 2003, Philip Morris changed its name to Altria Group, Inc. and by 2008 completed the spin-off of 100 percent of the shares of Philip Morris International to Atria’s shareholders.

Cigarette Brand Portfolio

Marlboro Red Pack; Marlboro Silver Pack; Marlboro Menthol; Marlboro Menthol Smooth 100’s; Marlboro Virginia Blend; Marlboro Medium; Marlboro Ultra Lights; Blend No. 54; Marlboro Mild and various lengths such as King Size or 100s of Marlboro hard and soft pack varieties.

Additional tobacco products include Alpine, Basic, Benson & Hedges, Bristol, Cambridge, Chesterfield, Commander, Dave’s, English Ovals, Lark, L&M, Merit, Parliament, Players, Saratoga and Virginia Slims. Marlboro also manufactures and markets Marlboro Snus, a sit-free, tobacco pouch product designed for adult smokers who are interested in smokeless tobacco alternatives to cigarettes.

The following ingredients found in Marlboro cigarettes are identified in descending order by weight: tobacco, water, sugars, propylene glycol, glycerol, licorice extract, diammonium phosphate, ammonium hydroxide, cocoa and cocoa products, carob bean and extract and natural and artificial flavors.

What’s more, there are other ingredients added to tobacco at levels less than 0.1 percent in Philip Morris USA cigarettes, including the natural and artificial flavors that give each brand its unique characteristics or the brand recipe and ingredients in the non-tobacco components.

Market Information:

* In 2009, Philip Morris USA market share was 41.8 percent

* Marlboro is the No. 1 cigarette brand in every state in the country

* Marlboro is the No. 1 brand for men and women across all adult age groups

* Marlboro’s share was larger than the next 12 cigarette brands combined in 2009

Philip Morris is searching for ways to reduce the health risks of smoking. For example, the company has developed a type of cigarette paper with banded paper technology that helps reduce the ignition strength of cigarettes as measured by certain test methods.

Marlboro, in order to comply with new regulations from the Food and Drug Administration, had until June 22, 2010 to rebrand tobacco products marketed as lights, ultra-lights, medium, mild or any similar brand.

As part of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, the FDA will
enforce other restrictions on cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products including eliminating free samples of cigarettes and requirements that new, larger health warning labels for smokeless tobacco products begin to rotate on labels, labeling and advertising. It also prohibits tobacco companies from sponsoring athletic, musical or cultural events.

Philip Morris, in compliance with Federal regulations on the subject of the sales of tobacco products, markets their products to adults who are legally eligible to smoke.

Research & Development

* It is developing new product technologies that may reduce the risk of cigarette smoking.

* It is exploring a number of reduced harm initiatives and monitoring public literature and information.

* The company actively engages with the public health community on topics such as developing potentially reduced-harm tobacco products.

Coupons

Philip Morris runs contests, sweepstakes and coupons to promote their tobacco products. The company will even send you a gift on your birthday. The Marlboro website is the main source of discount codes and printable coupons. You must be a registered member of the site. To sign up for special offers and promotions, including coupons from Marlboro, go directly to the company at www.Marlboro.com. Marlboro occasionally has direct mail campaigns during which it mails coupons to registered users.

Typical discount coupons from Philip Morris are for four dollars off a carton and/or one dollar off a pack of cigarettes. Promotion codes, which can be used to obtain some extra offers, can be found on some packs of Marlboro cigarettes as well as on other promotional materials.

Marlboro coupons can be found both online and offline. For example, Cigarette.com and Articlesnatch.com/coupons offer coupons for a variety of brands, including Marlboro and also visit www.cigarettes-below-cost.com and www.cigarettecoupons.us and www.cigarettecoupons.org.

Quitting Smoking

Public health authorities have not yet determined that any cigarette is less risky. While it can be difficult to quit, Philip Morris USA offers a free information resource called QuitAssist to help smokers quit. The voluntary effort connects smokers who have decided to quit to expert quitting information from public health authorities and others.

In addition, the company provides five steps to help people quit. Get ready, get support, learn new skills and behaviors, get medication and use it correctly and be prepared for relapses or difficult situations. Marlboro maintains studies have shown these five steps will help individuals quit especially if they are used together.

Philip Morris is a wholly-owned subsidiary of holding company, Altria Group today.

Other Altria Group companies:

* U. S. Smokeless Tobacco Company LLC, founded in 1822, produces smokeless tobacco.

* John Middleton Company, founded in 1856, manufactures cigars and pipe tobacco.

* Ste. Michelle Wine Estates Ltd., founded in 1934, produces classic European varietal wines.

* Philip Morris Capital Corporation, formed in 1982, built a diversified portfolio of assets including leveraged and direct finance lease investments.

Philip Morris Forecasts

In late June, Philip Morris revised its earnings outlook and expects to earn $3.70- $3.80 per share. Analysts, on average, were expecting full-year earnings of $3.77 a share. The higher projection, compared to the April 2010 guidance, reflects an improved business outlook, in particular with regard to Japan, as well as the positive impact of the reversal of certain tax provisions.

US cigarette industry volume declined about 8 percent in 2009, according to Philip Morris. Yet the cigarette industry accounted for an estimated $77 billion in consumer expenditures in 2009 and had an estimated industry profit pool of roughly $9.4 billion.
