What began as a simple business venture between two Perkins evolved into a major successful franchise celebrated all over America.

History

In 1958, Matt and Ivan Perkins decided to open their first pancake house in the Ohio city Cincinnati. Although initially beginning as a pancake house, over the years the restaurant has evolved into serving more than just breakfast items and has also placed dinner dishes along with other signature dishes onto their menu of things to serve. Matt and Ivan Perkins began their place of business with the belief that serving a variety of quality foods in a distinctly family-oriented atmosphere would come to be a successful business venture. Having that belief as a foundation for the growth of the Perkins establishment did not prove to be wrong.

Even at the start, Perkins believed that great food resulted in great customers, which was why during their first business venture they introduced special buttermilk pancakes with a top secret ingredient. They were quickly dubbed “the best pancakes in town”.

Over the course of the next ten years, Matt and Ivan Perkins decided to expand their business and further develop their franchise. In 1969, Wyman Nelson, a franchisee from Minnesota, sees even more of a growth potential in what Matt and Ivan have created and merges Smitty’s and Perkins into Perkins Cake & Steak Inc and assumes control of the endeavor on a nationwide scale. Furthermore, he focused on opening as many as 220 restaurants based off of that merger.

After retiring, Matt and Ivan Perkins sold the interest to the trademark and distribution rights of Perkins Cake & Steak. It was not until 1985 that restaurant entrepreneur Donald N. Smith gained rights over Perkins and became CEO and Chairman of the Board with the company. A year later, through building and remodeling, Smith improves and promotes the concept of Perkins from what it had previously been. He does so by coming up with the idea of having the in-store bakery and further honing the brand imagery while still keeping in peripheral what it was Perkins was all about years and years ago.

In 1987, it was renamed Perkins Family Restaurant, further emphasizing the importance quality family dining was to the company.

It was not until 2000 when Perkins’ name became the name many of its customers are familiar with today. Perkins Family Restaurant became Perkins Restaurant and Bakery after finalizing a merger between it and the subsidiary of The Restaurant Company. After the merger was complete, they announced that the company would now conduct business underneath the name Perkins Restaurant and Bakery.

As of 2004, the restaurant operates 494 restaurants in 34 states in the country of the United States of America and five provinces in the country of Canada.
