Company History

Hugo and Mary Herschend from Chicago loved nature, so in 1950, they leased Marvel Cave near Branson, Missouri, and started a business conducting tours through the cave in the summertime. Within ten years, Hugo had passed away, and because the cave tours were so popular that people were waiting in long lines to enter, Mary and her two sons, Jack and Pete, devised a way to entertain the tourists as they waited. The Herschends and 17 employees opened a small village with an 1880s theme near the cave, and it soon became even more popular than Marvel Cave. Native craftsmen who demonstrated traditional Ozark crafts were a part of the attraction for the tourists.

From that small beginning, the Herschend Family Entertainment foundation was formed, with a mission to create memories worth repeating, and now includes 24 themed entertainment facilities in 9 states. HFE is owned and operated by the Herschend family but employs an outside board of directors.

Promotion

In the beginning, the park used silver dollars as change when visitors paid for their admission, so it was called Silver Dollar City, and the word of mouth advertising created when those visitors returned home with the silver dollars was very effective.

Growth

Over two million people visit Silver Dollar City every year, and many of them schedule their vacations during one of the six world class festivals that the park hosts between April and December. The theme park is spread over 55 acres and has 1500 employees, 60 shops, 12 restaurants, 12 entertainment stages and 22 rides. 100 of the employees are skilled craftsmen who demonstrate crafts like glass blowing, weaving, candle making, blacksmithing, wood carving and soap making for visitors.

Popularity

Silver Dollar City is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world and is well know for providing wholesome family entertainment to millions of people.
